I would like to welcome you to this website mainly in French language. But as you will discover it through your visit, these pages are dedicated to stereoview photography, so one can manage to navigate into the albums, witout problem I hope,.

Thus, I made the choice not to produce a new history of stereophotography, but to concentrate on French Tissue stereoviews 1850-1880, that I like so much. These « day and night » stereoviews are so fragile that few remain today and finding complete series is absolutely seldom.

Great collectors have already created nice websites of stereoviews, but I feel it could be worth to share my collection virtually, even if antique stereoscopy still remain a sensorial personal experience. Perhaps not long, because of the ongoing technology progress.

Index

Tissue stero Technique, Diableries and co

- Technical explanation of Tissue stereoview construction
- Few famous series of Tissue, like « Surprises », « Tales of La Fontaine », « Diableries », even if I recommend for this latter to refer to the ultimate work actually made by the London stereoscopic company, in order to catch the best quality of day and night scans

Tissue stereo Opera Tales

Full index (never sure of that) of nearly 50 series of opera, theater, ballet, tales from the 1860's to the 1880's
Produced in Paris by Adolphe Block (BK), Jules Marinier (JM), and others, theses 3D views were the funniest way to enjoy again and again the favorite masterpiece of that time.
Most are from my collection, but in order to reach such an exhaustive compilation, I felt free to gather trough the years many photos on the Web; so please be all collectors thanked to offer free access to their antique pics.

Nos mondaines - Parisian women and risque

- Different series including theatrical celebrities, love affairs, suffragette end more

War

I first discovered stereoscopy when I received a family box full of personal glass stereophotos from Eugène Maurice Calamy (1893-1940), my great great father, young parisian doctor sent into the frst world war. His pics, taken with a verascope Jules Richard, are soft, often far from the bloody front. To share his views 100 years after is my way to thanks him for this great 3D testimony.
« War trough 3D » is a great way to denounce human madness and atrocities, still in action.
You will also find in this section amazing Tissue drawings views of colonial wars as well as some of the popular insurrection La Commune de Paris in 1871. (In construction)

Geneva and the Alps in 3D, some Tissue

Other great personal stereoview interest is a 3D tour of my city Geneva, Switzerland, and the first photographed climbers of the Alps around 1850-1900.

Many more antique 3D themes will come along my desire and foundings. Be sure to visit from time to time !

SOURCE- LINKS-CONTACT

You will find here the famous websites on stereoviews, viewers, sale, etc., as well as the seldom litterature I use to get information on stereoviews.
Very few has been searched on the Tissue stereo history, so please have also a look to the clever and fascinating work made by Mme Simonova Bulat on Conservation issues of stereo paper transparencies .

Caution

It is very difficult to obtain good pics of these Tissue stereoviews, because of the poor quality of some of them (more than 150 years to reach us), and my limited knowledge of photography to manage the black and white first cover with the lighted painted colors. I will try to offer better scans, as well as real 3D emotions, when it will be technically possible without lens. I also choose an already made album photo website, which allows you to get huge monoscopic pics, when clicking many time on each photo.

Final recommandation

Even if all explanations are now in French, please feel free to ask or comment in English !
I wish you a nice trip BACK TO THE THIRD DIMENSION !!!
